What is it about

Sustainable
Energy
Access

In many parts of the world access to energy cannot be taken for granted. Rural and especially refugee-hosting regions across the African continent are affected by energy poverty. Sustainable energy for cooking, electric light after sunset, and electricity for access to media are the basic energy needs. New Mile puts people at the center of its efforts and counteracts energy poverty.

Productive
Use of
energy

Sustainable development is hampered in regions affected by energy poverty. The use of renewable energies in the manufacturing industry, on the other hand, creates added value and contributes to economic independence. Access to technology increases the productivity of SMEs and smallholder farmers and new markets can be accessed.

Humanitarian
and
Development Work

The field of sustainable energy combines the mindsets of humanitarian work and development cooperation. Emergency aid serves to protect those affected, while in the development world long-term planning is common. New Mile assists people in need with basic energy and follows long-term concepts, to support sustainable development in the region.

Go where it matters

By far the majority of refugees worldwide do not have access to sustainable energy sources. It is estimated that only 6 % of people living in refugee camps have access to electricity and more than 80 % rely on firewood and charcoal for cooking. 80 million forcibly displaced people seek shelter in low- and middle-income countries. In the same regions, people struggle with reliable energy supplies, and local economies endeavor in their productivity, while climate change has strong direct impacts on rural communities.

Pillars of sustainable energy projects

Sustainable energy access must be built on several pillars. A holistic approach with long-lasting renewable energy technologies, technical training, and mutual participation is essential. Once the basic energy supply is ensured, further development can be initiated through economic activities and the productive use of energy.

Capacity building

Key to all efforts is knowledge transfer and the promotion of local expertise. Technical and vocational training is the backbone for long-term success and supports the people in the target regions in achieving economic independence.

Last Mile Energy Access

Basic access to energy is a key global challenge. The UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development has set the goal of ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all (SDG 7). By 2030 all households worldwide, which implies remote regions and displaced people, should have access to electricity. Energy supply must reach the last mile and therefore the people are at the center of all efforts.
